Improving conditions for health and wellbeing in small and medium enterprises in Aotearoa New Zealand

Wellbeing is a central issue of concern for many New Zealand organisations. Increasingly, organisations and regulatory agencies in New Zealand are shifting focus and realising the important role that the work environment plays in helping or hindering wellbeing. Indeed, strong international research evidence shows that improving how we structure and manage work will reduce stress and, in turn, will boost employee wellbeing.

In a recent three-year research project – The Healthy Work Project – we looked at how small and medium sized organisations (SMEs) in New Zealand can enhance wellbeing in the workplace. Our results lead to useful information to help SMEs identify and address the conditions that support healthy work.

In this website you will find information about The Healthy Work Project, along with resources and tools to help you understand how the work environment in your organisation affects your employees, and develop a tailored action plan to address psychosocial risk in your workplace.

What does healthy work look like in practice?

With the backing of international research evidence, and the results of The Healthy Work Project we advocate that organisations seeking to improve wellbeing should start with their Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC). By fostering a climate that values and supports health and wellbeing, organisations are better able to identify and address work-related issues, improve employee wellbeing, and enjoy the benefits of happier and healthier employees.
